Transformation: The Beautiful Side Of Falling Apart
Remoulding often involves breaking down.
Introduction:
Welcome my friend,
It's the weekend, and our ritual conversation is back in swing.
How are you feeling today?
This week's theme delves into one possible cause of any unease you might be experiencing, so that you can understand that it's for good reason.
Yet, if it doesn't apply to you right now, it still will soon.
After all, we're all looking to transform beautifully in one way or the other, becoming better than we are.
Discussion:
When we think of transformation, we often envision positive change, a beautiful evolution into better versions of ourselves; and rightly so.
We eagerly anticipate this outcome, our hearts racing with dreams of who we’re about to become.
Yet, we rarely consider the process: the steps, struggles, and challenges required to transition from one point in life to another.
This is what catches us off guard.
As one author so beautifully captured it:
“You won't always recognize your becoming, because transformation feels like falling apart before it feels like arriving.”
This is the heart of our conversation today.
■ Examining Some Catalyst For Change
Having an excellent spirit means that at some point comfort is eventually going to feel really uncomfortable to us, sparking such unease within ourselves for our current state.
Here, we've recognized our untapped potential and are burdened by the thought that it's being underutilized.
It's this stirred consciousness that fuels such restlessness and deep desire for transformation, serving as a powerful catalyst for change.
Other times, we opt to work on ourselves for the sake of personal growth, tackling some of our behaviors we’re dissatisfied with because they've led to lost relationships or missed opportunities.
This is another catalyst for change.
Then there's the transformation that's inspired by adversity, such as the loss of a loved one or something dear to us, so that our perspective on the meaning of life is significantly altered.
Broken by such hardships, we cannot stay the same; because as we piece ourselves back together, we become someone new.
This is another such example.
Which means that throughout our lives, we have experiences that drive us to pursue transformation, striving to embody versions of ourselves that resonate with our innermost being.
However, while a strong desire ignites the spark, true transformation isn't achieved by mere willingness alone.
■ Why We Can't Handle Change
Transformation often feels like disintegration because reshaping requires dismantling what currently exists.
This process can be deeply painful, which is why we may not initially embrace transformation until its benefits become evident.
Yet, how do we reach that point without first accepting and enduring the discomfort?
The truth is, transformation is challenging because it demands stepping beyond our comfort zone, unlearning outdated beliefs, and adopting new ones.
Which creates a struggle, as learning is not instantaneous, leaving us in a state of limbo; too advanced for where we are but not yet ready to become who we aspire to be.
Indeed, this is a crucial point where we must deliberately push ourselves to avoid regressing into what we aim to outgrow.
From that we move on to the next challenge of change, which is that during this breakdown, tangible progress is hard to discern, leaving us questioning whether our efforts are futile.
Yet, isn’t this similar to an artist breaking down the remnants of their work before reshaping it?
Here, the aim is to allow the piece to fully take on its new form rather than becoming a patchwork of the old design.
The same applies to us.
To transform, we first experience events that shatter us, making us less resistant to change and more open to letting go of obsolete beliefs that no longer serve us.
In this vulnerable state, we become more willing and flexible, which benefits us, as we can now steadily grow into a better, ever evolving version of ourselves.
Another such reason why we struggle with change is the fear of how long our transformation will take or even questioning our ability to successfully do so.
Yet, this self doubt is self sabotaging because even small, gradual progress is better than none at all.
■ Requirements For Change
Each phase of our transformation journey demands specific qualities, some of which we already know well.
However, for the sake of meaningful discussion, let’s briefly outline them:
▪︎ Willingness
The drive for change originates within, making it challenging to persuade others to embrace it.
Although, it's always better to share our genuine perspectives hoping it can plant that seed that may one day inspire them to this intentional change.
▪︎ Humility
Turning over a new leaf requires admitting that we haven’t built the life we envisioned.
Until we make this acceptance, we wouldn't wholeheartedly move forward as our ego clings to these old patterns, hoping for one last chance.
Yet, this only delays our progress.
▪︎ Conviction
A firm belief that transformation is worthwhile fuels our commitment to push through challenges instead of retreating to familiarity.
Here, we're certain that our rewards will come in due time after we've done the work involved.
▪︎ Hard Work
Change is a deliberate process.
What we don’t actively transform, we choose to keep as is.
Having chosen excellence it requires that we show effort beyond the ordinary.
▪︎ Perseverance
The strength to endure until transformation is complete is called perseverance.
It’s the quality to persist through setbacks, pressing forward until we succeed.
▪︎ Patience
Transformation unfolds over time through experience and growth.
We must grant ourselves grace, allowing the process the time it needs to fully take shape.
■ The Big Shake Off
One of life's toughest experiences is facing our hardest moments alone, especially when we're used to having everyone around during better times.
Although deeply painful, this solitude teaches us a unique lesson we could only learn through such isolation.
Which is that in those darkest moments, only God can truly comfort us, standing in the gap as a faithful companion.
Through this intimate time together, He mends our hearts, transforming us beautifully.
This ensures that we don't become bitter from the ordeal but are instead inspired to support others in their own transformation, illuminating their way.
Similarly, this breakdown reveals who and what genuinely matters, guiding us to direct our energy wisely moving forward.
Summary:
Transformation is the beautiful side of falling apart.
Often, the change we seek is painful because it detaches us from harmful things we've grown fond of.
Which is why releasing them is essential, so that our current self doesn't block the path to who we're looking to become.
