Self Development: Compounding Self Worth Overtime
The growth of an investment portfolio is measured by the reflected increase in numbers
Introduction:
Welcome my friend,
If you're into investing, especially as it concerns stocks, and these days, cryptocurrencies, either as a fund manager or personal account manager or trader, today's theme will be very relatable.
Yet if you're not, there's still something for you.
This is because even if you've never managed an investment portfolio, chances are that you've tried to save up some money to purchase an item or solve a particular problem.
So whichever we relate to, what is actually significant is that both the fund manager and the person saving, have the common aim of increasing the money in their respective accounts.
For this reason, they'll both approach these commitments with the same attitude and mindset; being to, intentionally look out for, and map out strategies to grow these funds.
So whether it's the complexities of investing long term, with sights on retirement or merely saving up parts of our income to make a major purchase, the aim is always to keep stacking up until the target amount is realized.
So how does this relate to us?
You see my friend, you're the portfolio; and this beautiful life that you have is designed to be managed well in such a way that it grows in value with every passing minute.
Quite impressively, we've come this far for folks that arrived here naked, tiny babies, that knew nothing.
Yet there's still so much more that we can be.
So how do we realize these potentials?
Discussion:
Like many investors who set out with goals to grow accounts to, and retire with portfolios in excess of a million dollars ($1m), many of us have big dreams of what we want to achieve with our lives in the near future.
However, dreaming alone isn't enough which leaves us with the task of creating and following feasible action plans.
This is what self development is about.
We can therefore describe self development as the transformative and refining actions of disciplined learning that we continually undergo in order to become better versions of ourselves.
In other words, it's who we must become in order to achieve our goals.
■ Aspects Of Our Development
For most people the standard of assessment for how far they've come is their bank account, real estate, business worth and other such material metrics; but for us as servants of God, those alone are not enough.
When we imagine the best version of ourselves, our vision of self actualization should transcend money, social class and power, so that we may build our lives around peace of mind and fulfillment as the ultimate goals.
This way, rather than just “existing” and “going with the flow” we can intentionally commit our time and efforts to working on these following aspects of our self development:
▪︎ Spiritual Development
Self awareness and belief in ourselves according to God's perspective of us, is what spiritual development entails, as we become conscious of God's love that enables us to do all things.
Faith gives us the conviction to take the “risk” of following God's will for our lives on the path of our purpose, while we're still too raw, unrefined and unprepared for what he's called us for.
So despite everyone else thinking we're crazy, we go on to do what God wants us to, regardless.
Until he surely perfects it, to the amazement of them all, and to His glory.
This is how we learn to replace self doubt with self confidence having seen him come through for us every step on the way.
▪︎ Character Development
Patience, tolerance, and self control are virtues that improve the quality of our relationships as we learn to be at peace with those around us.
When we go through circumstances in life that challenge our confidence in our beauty, intellect, and financial capacity we learn that there is no security in perishing things.
Truth is, there's no true humility until we lay our ego aside having realized that everything we are, we have or will ever accomplish is because God enables us; not because we're special or better than anyone else.
Also, we learn to be genuinely happy for others, when they're winning because we're not jealous of their lives, well content with our own God given roles here, even if they're not as glamorous.
The ultimate proof of our character development will be our willingness to stand firm on truth and integrity when everyone else thinks we should cash out from them.
▪︎ Career Development
The value of our skills and abilities will be determined by the complexity or relevance of the problems that they solve.
When we provide solutions to others, they part ways with their money, so that we can use it to attend to ours, and sort our own bills.
If we acquire high paying skills, we'll be paid well enough to fast track our financial growth.
Also, to grow quickly yet stably in most ventures, we'll need the right mentor.
Having the right guide beside us can propel us into doing more in a short time, having learned a lot more by good counsel rather than experience.
▪︎ Emotional Development
Without the mental toughness to face our challenges, we'll be tempted to give up with life every time it deals us a difficult hand.
Our many struggles doesn't make us unfortunate or unlucky, it just means we're God's choicest soldiers called with the responsibility to trust Him absolutely or reject Him to get overwhelmed by sadness.
Once we learn and accept that God is in charge of all our circumstances, we show more emotional stability and confidence.
▪︎ Financial Development
Financial maturity isn't just about how much money and other such tangible resources that we have, but how well we're able to manage everything God has blessed us with.
To be good stewards of these blessings requires us to pay them forward to others, and this is what we do when we help those in need.
Here, we understand that because we can afford it, doesn't mean we have to buy it.
■ Challenges To Our Development
Once we feel that we're not enough, then we'll most certainly never try to be.
Many of us have this limiting belief that we don't have what it takes to come good especially as our parents, loved ones and the society around us has continued to echo this sentiment.
Yet this is so untrue.
Every building was once an empty land and every tree was once a seed.
We don't come in finished form, we go to transform, after we've believed that we can, having now begun the journey of intentionally building ourselves.
When we make a beautiful life out of a botched situation we inspire our tribe, becoming symbols of what damaged people can become when they walk with God.
This means that it involves action.
We have to willingly give up old harmful habits to adapt to new ones and many times this may mean avoiding friends and places that trigger these habits.
This can be challenging.
There's no self development without discipline so until we're able to subject ourselves to the pain of self restraint amidst overpowering lust, we'll be unable to do much to grow.
Summary:
To build our portfolios around peace of mind and fulfillment, is to live a life bigger than us, which is that which has been dedicated to serving others.
As we go about our daily businesses, we're encouraged to understand that beyond making a living out of our jobs, we're to use them to show care and concern to others, inspiring them to do the same.
Lastly, the aim of our self development is to become better versions of ourselves ready to take up bigger responsibilities in our immediate communities and society at large.
The reward of this is deep happiness and joy immeasurable and priceless, worth a lot more than all the money the hedge fund manager is growing for his investors.
We're God's investment and he wants us to multiply, bearing good fruits.
