Peace: The Origin.
In a fast moving and chaotic world, overcoming anxiety with calmness is one of the emotional goals of many yet only a few search for it in the right place.
Introduction:
Welcome my friend!
We've made it to yet another edition of this weekly newsletter; it's because you've taken out your time to read this that I'll be here again next week. Gracias!
At the end of today's discussion, we would have understood peace of mind in a way that works for me and one which I highly recommend.
Firstly, when I got the topic of this message, I wasn't sure if it was the right call going from discussing Open Relationships last week to Peace this one, considering how both are entirely different topics of interest.
However, I was determined to get it written before deciding if it'd make it here or be another twitter thread. (see @truekingmaker on Twitter for more inspirationals)
So I got writing and two paragraphs in, as I checked the Google dictionary for the definition of peace, I saw something that caught my attention enough to confirm that this is indeed a good time to have this conversation regardless of the vast switch in subject.
According to the dictionary, 'peace' is defined as;
freedom from disturbance; tranquility.
Also, the sample sentence read;
"he just wanted to drink a few beers in peace"
The outstanding thing here is that the above definition and corresponding sentence portrays peace as a physical attribute when it is indeed an emotional one.
For instance, if the man walked into an empty pub by ten o'clock on a Monday morning, he'd have had enough tranquility to have his beer and without disturbance.
But then, if on the same morning his son is laid unconscious in the hospital, or he's behind schedule in his loan repayment, we'd both agree he's merely fulfilled the conditions of "no disturbance and tranquility" yet is in no way at peace.
This forms the basis of this discussion, as we look to understand peace as a state of inner calmness and reassurance as well as the source of it.
Discussion:
The aim of this conversation is to arrive at a point where a man can find true emotional tranquility, regardless of his circumstances; as this is what peace is about.
To do this effectively, we need to understand the factors affecting our peace and how to handle them successfully.
■ Why we're not at Peace:
The origin of all worries and anxiety is fear. As humans the need for certainty, assurance and control means that we'll wake up each day worried for the future as it concerns failure, sickness, hunger, debt, accidents and so on.
Other times, after basic needs are met, we're still troubled by the fear of rejection; of our appearance, race, beliefs or social class.
In one way or the other we find ourselves disturbed from within which is normal as it acknowledges our limitations in handling all of our affairs on our own. Here, we understand how quickly things can go wrong, so we live on the edge.
■ Why many don't find Peace:
The dictionary definition of peace is a good example that we don't really know what we're looking for. This explains why we look for it in all the wrong places:
▪︎Money
It's very logical for someone that grew up in lack (no food, behind rent, huge debt) to think that making enough to offset these bills will bring peace. So we work hard and amass so much only to get anxious of other things like fear of sickness or losing all we've got.
▪︎Career
For those of us whose anxiety come from rejection, we may go in search of peace in 'a prestigious career'.
For us, the higher we attained the more acceptable we thought we'd become.
Here, overtime, we may begin to feel empty with each achievement as we miss the love of the relationships sacrificed in their pursuit.
▪︎Pleasures
Some of us may find some satisfaction in drugs and lust for a while but ultimately we feel more troubled with them than when we first began. This is because in the end, the problems we were distracted from, are still there waiting to be solved.
■ Where to find Peace:
Having established that the cause of all our worries is fear isn't it right to seek peace in the place where we've seen all of them slowly disappear?
As we move away from the dictionary to reality we can define peace as:
“the acceptance and trust in God admitting our limitations and giving him full control.”
Here, the reasons for our fears still exist but our anxiety disappears into the faith that he'll come through for us.
This is the basis for genuine peace.
■ How to find peace:
Peace comes from purpose.
Since the source of peace points back to creation we can only find it in carrying out the duties we've been created for.
In using our gifts and talents in the service of others in our homes, work places, and the society at large, we find the peace of fulfillment.
To successfully live this purpose we have to be open to meet the three conditions of: to listen, trust and obey God. This is important, else, we think God to be a liar when we haven't in fact, played our own role.
It's also important to understand that we're not under any pressures to play our roles as he's constantly looking to guide us through them. All that is required of us is a willing and remorseful heart.
■ Benefits of Peace:
A life at peace isn't one without problems but one that isn't desperate for solutions. It's one that is contented because it appreciates the value of progress and is patiently doing the inner work.
At peace we understand that most of our sufferings are unto character development which makes us adapt the right attitude to live through them until we overcome them.
Summary:
Peace is a state of total certainty where we've given up the doubts from our limitations for the assurance that God will always come through for us regardless of our circumstances if only we're willing to listen, trust and obey him.
The origin of peace is right there within us, a simple intimate connection to the source of our creation; God.
