Consistency: The Impact Of Repetition
...if the cracks continue long enough, it'll eventually break open.
Introduction:
Hello my friend,
Today we'd be having our conversation around a word I may yet use to describe you.
Indeed, you're a consistent friend, showing up here every weekend to spend this time here together regardless of your other activities.
As you know, it's not something that I'll ever get so used to, that I'd begin to take it for granted.
I appreciate your time, your availability and most importantly your willingness to adapt these discussions to your lifestyle.
In it you've shown your wisdom because it takes humility to learn; since it's difficult to teach a person what they think they already know.
Yet everyone who wants to grow must be willing to learn, being able to lay their ego aside when confronted with new facts that may alter the ‘truth’ as they used to know it.
This is the relationship between humility and enlightenment.
So that we're all encouraged to become better by first accepting that we're beautiful works in progress; and to train ourselves to be eager to continue to do this inner work.
Welcome dear friend, howdy?
Discussion:
Consistency is the rate at which we're able to put in effort as a show of our commitment towards a particular goal, relationship or course.
When a person is consistent, it means they understand what it takes to show up regardless because it's a matter of discipline and duty, rather than feelings - which alone can't be counted on to not get tired or discouraged before the work is done.
It's for this reason that consistency as a trait is judged on a long term basis, after the person has proven that they can be relied on the same way repeatedly over time.
■ A Wrong Conviction
The difference between being patient and wasting time is that in being patient we're waiting for something that will yet happen to arrive.
Whereas, in time wasting there's actually no likelihood of our wait being rewarded; regardless of how long we continue to do so.
This also applies to consistency because there's a relationship between our convictions and where our efforts go in and if we exert our commitment on the wrong things it won't yield us much rewards.
While it's good to be consistent, we need to do so when we're already in the right direction so that efforts can compound overtime to great effect.
Else, it's not worth it.
For instance, if a person gets into business with a wrong business model that isn't suited to his market, all their consistency in that same direction becomes counterproductive as they only continue to dig themselves further down the rabbit hole.
This means that consistency isn't enough unless what we're consistent in is also as good.
■ How Consistency Compounds
When good efforts accumulate over time, it leads to an outcome called success.
Our consistency shows in how we're able to remain unfazed with our commitment towards a particular course even through thick and thin because we're convinced that all our efforts are adding up.
Truth is, to receive and enjoy the best, we must put in effort to become and give the same and this means being consistent in the following aspects of our life:
▪︎ Relationships
All healthy relationships were built by people who were willing to make it work because they have this love for one another that made it feel worth the effort.
We need to consistently nurture our relationships caring for the well being of our friends as much as we do ours because we're concerned.
This is how we teach them to treat us back the same way.
Love compels us to try to outgive each other whether with gifts or kind gestures of warmth, ease and peace.
When we only reach out to folks in our times of need, what we're saying is that we really don't care about them but merely want what keeping them around can offer us.
This is selfish and manipulative.
No one owes us any favours and it's even worse when all we do is demand without giving.
We can't say we have nothing to offer because indeed everyone has something they can bring to a relationship if only they're willing to be sensitive enough to identify it.
Many times all it takes it's a genuine show of care to give a friend a much needed feeling of support and encouragement.
▪︎ Careers
When we're always trying out our hands on one job or the other, we miss out on the reward of consistency because we're unable to do one thing enough to gain the level of experience it takes to turn naivety to mastery.
This may not be the best way to go.
While other jobs and opportunities may provide stepping stones or stop gaps to our dream job, it's important to always go in a direction that is aligned to our professional growth.
This will sometimes require us to pass up opportunities in other sectors different to ours because we want to remain in our grind; continuing our learning and stability until we eventually begin to thrive in it.
Longevity in our preferred and well suited career path allows us to reach the peak of our potentials, which is what fulfillment is about.
▪︎ Behaviours
When our character is consistent with our reputation it means that we have integrity and can be relied upon.
When we have strong values and principles that can be attested to, others can know what to expect of us and would naturally want to plug us to roles and opportunities that we're suited for.
Consistency in our behaviour overtime means that people can place their trust in us which is a big deal when it comes to doing business.
▪︎ Beliefs
If we're inconsistent with our beliefs, those who don't understand them may talk us out of what we know to be true.
As believers our faith in God should be rooted in our personal relationship with Him so that no one can mislead us on His ways; having felt Him in the experiences we've had in our own lives.
When our beliefs swing according to our feelings or environment we miss out on the blessing of consistently trusting God through all of our circumstances.
■ What Consistency Requires Of Us
When we're starting off, there's always this temptation to want to do it as big as someone else when most likely they're at an advanced level to us.
This comparison can be discouraging unless we're using it as an inspiration to level up in due time having seen a good example of what we can become.
Most great things were achieved by people who had nothing but self belief, drive and discipline and when we show up everyday we get better at our craft having gained more experience from doing it over again.
At its finest, mastery means that we're able to do our work instinctively since it's become a part of us and attaining this level is only possible when we've been in it long enough.
Summary:
Consistency can be illustrated with what happens when a person tries to break open a wooden safe with an axe
While a single hit may not break it, with every one it gets closer with a new crack made and if the cracks continue long enough, it'll eventually break open.
Consistency is therefore how we persevere until we get what we want because we believe that we can.
When little efforts go in repeatedly over time, it can have huge impacts that bring us closer to our goals.
