A Name: The Power Of It
One of the most bizarre reasons I once closed a deal was that Conor McGregor follows my page.
Introduction:
Welcome my friend,
It's another weekend to unwind here together, one word after the other until we've had a whole conversation.
How have you really been?
Indeed, our time together always elevates my mood and I hope it can do that for you too; if it's something that you need.
Also, today's discussion is going to be a short one.
However, that doesn't in any way mean that it'll be short of the very lessons which has drawn us into continuing to show up here.
Cheers to a happy weekend my friend.
Now let's get on with the business of the day.
Discussion:
The work of a salesperson is to be able to sell the value of an offer to its market, closing as many deals.
For this reason, a lot of work goes into preparing the sales pitch, highlighting every solution the offer provides and every of its competitive advantages over others.
So to do all that work only to close the deal by the mere reason of being followed by Conor McGregor is “crazy work”.
However, such is the power in a name and the influence that it wields, even if it's merely perceived than it is real, as in this case.
■ The Potency Of A Name
The reason being followed by Conor McGregor is a big deal in this case is that he's a renowned Five (5) Time World Champion with belts in different categories of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
He also has over ten million (10m) followers on X, following back merely about one thousand (1k) other accounts including the page I was pitching my sales from.
So for an offer proposing digital branding services, that alone struck the prospect as some kind of validation of the brand value, so that we struck a deal.
Now in almost a year of working together since then, the said client can confirm that it wasn't a bad decision to trust our brand, even if it was for such a seemingly bizarre reason.
■ Adding Value To A Name
Reputation is other people's perception of another person.
In order words what a person is known for.
This is the value others attach to our name whether good or bad according to our interactions with them or the opinions of others who have interacted with us.
It's the name we make for ourselves in our immediate society so that others know what to expect of us.
This kind of name has less to do with our accomplishments, money or position but other behaviors people associate us with.
For instance, when we show integrity and reliability others know that they can trust us.
This is a good name to have and sets the tone for every other value we can go on to add to it.
Truth is, even if most people don't pay much attention to it, trust is a social capital that gives others the confidence to invest in us, support us, or have transactions with us.
This gives us an edge.
So that when it's combined with our resourcefulness, we go on to add value to our name, completing the rise from nothing to something.
This is the kind of reputation that we establish on the basis of our achievements and our superstar fighter is a good example, fighting his way up until he placed his name side by side with the all time greats.
This takes time and extra effort to accomplish and those who have, didn't necessarily need to have all the resources in place.
They just got started, persevering willingly through their journey until they pushed through.
This is something we can learn from.
Once we want something enough to the point that our desire to succeed inspires us to be resourceful, we're going to achieve it because we'll always find a way.
■ The Responsibility Behind A Name
When we begin to excel greatly in our respective fields, we position ourselves as leaders and role models, setting the pace for others to follow.
Here, folks appreciate, respect and want to associate with us.
This is what influence is about and it's a responsibility that falls on those that have made this kind of name for themselves.
When others look up to us, they have put us on such a high pedestal and we shouldn't let them down by turning out to be a negative influence.
■ Making The Most Of A Name
Closing a deal because of a mere following is proof that a name can be our access, opening many doors.
Folks will always remember how we made them feel and if our association with them ended in a way that left a sour taste, our name wouldn't be able to access that door in the future.
Truth is, other people can be the means through which opportunities come to us.
When we attach ourselves to their reputable names and form partnerships with them, we ride on their existing platform to establish our own name, rising through the ranks faster than if we're doing it alone.
This is a hack most people ignore.
■ Defending A Name
When we watch other people run smear campaigns, defaming another's name, do we speak up, keep mute or join?
Silence is betrayal when we watch an innocent person face condemnation or persecution and do nothing because we're afraid of how the negativity now surrounding them will rub off on our own name.
This isn't right.
In the same vein, if someone we openly associate with by virtue of their misconduct faces a huge push back, it's not in our place to try to whitewash it.
If we do, we show that our name isn't worth much, reducing ourselves to mere apologists.
■ The Only Name
We all want to make names for ourselves in order to feel appreciated and important, knowing that we matter and can make an impact.
This is a natural feeling of all men.
However, most of us have gone about it the wrong way.
Some have made the decision to make money by all means in a quest to make a name for themselves as rich folks, then turning around to use philanthropy as if to make up for the harm they're causing the society.
This is self deceit.
Others have become outlaws, even serial killers just to do something “heroic” that catches attention.
This is self sabotage.
Indeed, the reality is that as believers we have the most potent name freely given to us in Jesus Christ, all we just have to do is believe.
When we do, He then empowers us to go out there and make a name for ourselves, so that by doing so, we bring Glory to His name.
This is the difference between being humble and prideful arrogance and is the relationship between faith and self confidence.
God has given us our gifts and talents to bring honour to His name and when we use them to serve Him in the path of our purpose, we live through life in the authority of His name; the name that's above all names.
This is the greatest security there is and an awesome privilege.
Summary:
It's been a good time here with you my friend.
See you next week.
